Every historical restoration starts with a careful assessment of what's original, what's been altered over the years, and what actually needs to be repaired versus replaced. We spend more time in this discovery phase than we would on a standard renovation, because decisions here — what to preserve, what to replicate, and what materials will actually match — shape everything that follows. Depending on scope, these projects can range from a few weeks for a single room to several months for a full structural and cosmetic restoration.
Matching original materials is often the hardest part of this work, since many profiles and species used in older Long Island homes are no longer commercially available. We frequently have millwork custom-milled to match existing profiles rather than substituting a close-but-not-quite modern equivalent, and we source period-appropriate hardware, glass, and trim wherever possible.
Structural repairs in older homes require a different level of care than new construction — framing, sills, and load-bearing elements in a century-old home often don't match modern lumber dimensions, and repairs need to account for settling and movement that's already happened over decades.
