Fireplace Mantels & Surrounds on Long Island
The fireplace is usually the focal point of the room it’s in. A well-proportioned wood mantel and surround can change how the whole room reads, whether the fireplace is wood-burning, gas, or electric.
We design and build wood mantels and surrounds to fit the opening, the wall, and the style of the house — from a simple shelf mantel to a full surround with pilasters, a frieze, and crown, or a built-in mantel wall with cabinetry on either side.
What’s Involved
- Measuring the firebox opening, hearth, and surrounding wall
- Checking required clearances between the opening and any wood trim
- Designing the mantel style, height, and proportions
- Building the mantel and surround, either in the shop or on site
- Installing, scribing to the wall and hearth, and finishing
Fire code sets minimum clearances between a fireplace opening and combustible material such as a wood mantel shelf or surround trim. Those distances depend on the type of fireplace and, for gas and manufactured units, on the manufacturer’s installation instructions. We confirm the required clearances for your specific unit before finalizing the design, since they often set the minimum height of the shelf and how far the trim can sit from the opening.
Material Options
Painted mantels are typically built from poplar and MDF, which take paint well and hold crisp profiles. For a stained or natural finish, oak, cherry, maple, and walnut are common choices; reclaimed beams are another option for a rustic shelf. The surround itself can be combined with stone, tile, or brick that’s already in place, and we can design the mantel to sit over existing masonry or replace an outdated wood surround.
How a Project Is Scoped
We start by looking at the fireplace and the room: ceiling height, window and door locations, and any existing trim the mantel should match. We’ll go over styles you like, note the clearance requirements, and sketch the proportions. Whether there’s cabinetry or shelving on either side has the biggest effect on the scope.
How Long It Takes
A standalone mantel shelf or simple surround is a small project. A full surround with columns and crown takes longer, and a full mantel wall with built-ins is closer to a built-in cabinetry project. Finishing time for stain or paint is part of the schedule too. We’ll give you a timeline once the design is settled.
What Affects Cost
- Size and complexity of the design (shelf only versus full surround)
- Paint-grade versus stain-grade hardwood
- Built-in cabinetry or shelving on either side
- Removing an existing mantel or surround
- Coordination with stone, tile, or masonry work
