What to Expect During Your Millwork Project
A millwork project typically starts with a design conversation — what style fits the room, what height and profile makes sense for the ceiling and proportions, and whether we're matching existing trim or introducing something new. From there we take precise measurements, mill or source the material, and install the framework directly onto your walls or ceiling, followed by the final trim pieces, caulking, and paint or stain. Smaller projects like a single accent wall or fireplace surround can often be completed in a few days, while a full-home millwork package can take several weeks depending on scope.
Poplar and MDF are the most common material choices for painted millwork because they take paint smoothly and cost less than hardwood, while homeowners who want a stained, natural-wood look typically choose oak, maple, or poplar depending on the grain they prefer. For historic homes, we sometimes work with owners to source or mill profiles that match original, no-longer-manufactured trim styles.
Millwork is unforgiving of small errors — a slightly uneven crown molding line or a poorly mitered corner is immediately noticeable in a way other renovation work often isn't.
